Leadership includes Vision-Goals-Planning!
Now what do I do?
Have you ever been in a bind, and wondered what to do next? Can you "hear" your mom saying from the distant (or not so distant) past, "you should have thought about that first!"
One of the key aspects of leadership and being a leader is to create a positive future. This "positive future" can be broken down into three special words: vision, goals, and planning.
Following this important leadership process can help keep away muchos problemas. More importantly, it gives you a road-map to achievement & success!
It all starts with "Vision"
Leadership begins with vision!
Vision is basically a picture of future success. It is a "photograph" of what success looks like. Your vision of future success could be for yourself, your family, your job or business, your community involvement, or a combination of any of these.
For example, your personal vision might include having a loving and nurturing family, plus being a highly successful department manager at your company.
Your team vision, a shared vision of your group, might be what future success would look like for that department at your company that you'd like to be manager of some day.
Regardless, to begin to be a leader of any sort, you start off with that vision of what you think that future success will look like. That future success is chock full of positive and good stuff!
We at Latino Alliance have our vision of muchos Latinos having a better life, being more and more successful, and being in all kinds of leadership roles (see our vision)!
Goals come next, amigos!
Achieved Goals = Attained Vision
Goals are key objectives that need to be met to ensure that your vision is attained.
Example: My vision is "a much better life for my children..."
These goals will help ensure that my vision is successful:
You need to achieve your goals if you intend to attain your vision. A strong focus, discipline, responsibility, and character will help keep you working on those goals so that one day you can attain your vision!
This leadership process requires another important step in order to lessen the number of times that you find yourself in a real bind, scratching your head and asking yourself "now what do I do?" It's called planning.
OK, we're back to Planning again!
Planning helps you to avoid some stress!
To achieve that important goal, you need a plan. Planning cuts down on the number of times your mom says, "you should have thought about that first!" Planning also helps you to take the right route up to the top of the mountain so that you don't become lost or stranded in the middle of nowhere with no resources and options. Remember Preparar para el Progreso and the 7 P's? Proper prior planning prevents pretty poor performance!
Things you can do to make a plan to achieve your goal: see the Vision-Goals-Planning worksheet; write your plan down; do a "to do" list; make a checklist; stay organized and focused; and try not to waste too much time. If you ever get sidetracked, you can always go back and work your plan!
