We at Latino Alliance truly appreciate the sentiments of The Republican and its affiliates (Masslive & El Pueblo Latino) on their support of local Latinos making progress and achieving success in western Mass.!
In their editorial last fall, they stated, "The face of Springfield is changing. And to the folks who complain that the “city isn't what it used to be,” we say: Get over it! Join us in embracing the change."
The editorial also stated, "That’s why we believe that Springfield’s best hope of community revitalization depends on the progress of the city’s rapidly growing Latino population, the large majority of which is of Puerto Rican descent, and therefore U.S. citizens from birth. We are sick and tired of subtle and not-so-subtle prejudice against Hispanics in our region – very similar to the biases aimed at Irish and Italian newcomers a few generations ago." It went on to say, "To the non-Hispanics here who paint this population with a broad unflattering brush, we ask you to look back to their own families’ roots. Unless your family was Native American, your ancestors were once climbing the same economic and social ladders as today’s Latinos."
Latino Alliance strongly agrees with The Republican that local Latinos "have the potential to become a great energizing social, economic and political force to transform urban Western Massachusetts for the better."
We say: Muchos Gracias!
